Panofind is a freeware desktop search utility for Windows that can rapidly find files and folders by name and content. While the binaries are licensed under a permissive license, it is not open-source.
Overview
[edit]Panofind installs a Windows service that indexes files based on file name and content.
Different file types are currently supported, including the various Office formats as well as audio, video and image formats. In addition, text, RTF and CSV file formats are indexed. Files within compressed files are also indexed (e.g. ZIP, 7z or RAR). The index is automatically updated when files are changed and after a given time. Only configured directories are considered in order to display only relevant files in the search results.
There is a simple search mode as well as one for complex search queries. The search results are presented accordingly in a file preview.
Security concerns
[edit]Since the service works with administrative rights, all configured files of the computer appear in the search results. It is therefore not possible to achieve separate search results for different users on that computer.
